  • Business analytics specialist: Business analytics is the process of using data to improve the performance of businesses.
  • Marketing analytics specialist: Marketing analytics is the process of using data to improve the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

Here’s what it takes to become a data analytics professional and succeed in a career at the forefront of technology today.

Skills and Education Required for a Data Analytics Career

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the skills and education required for a data analytics career will vary depending on the specific role you are pursuing.

However, some technical and communications skills are useful for a data analytics career.

Technical Skills

One of the most important things to understand about data analytics is that it requires a strong foundation in technical skills. This means applicants should be comfortable working with software and databases and should understand how to interpret and analyze data.

Without these technical skills, pursuing a career in data analytics would be very difficult. Using software to collect and analyze data is essential for this field.

Additionally, understanding how to interpret data and find ways to perform the large-scale analysis is also crucial.

Some of the specific technical skills you may need for a career in data analytics include:

  • SQL:  SQL is a standard language for storing, manipulating, and retrieving data from databases. Any applicant interested in data analytics should be comfortable working with SQL.
  • Python: Python is a versatile programming language for various tasks, including data analysis. Applicants interested in data analytics should learn Python to make themselves more marketable.
  • Excel: Excel is a spreadsheet program commonly used in data analysis. Applicants interested in data analytics should be comfortable using this software to manipulate and analyze data.

Communication Skills

One of the most important skills for a data analytics career is communicating clearly and effectively. This means explaining the data and how it can be used to help the company.

Good communication skills are critical in any career but especially in data analytics. Data analysts need to be able to:

  1. Explain data and analytics concepts to people who are not familiar with them.
  2. Present information clearly and concisely.
  3. Use visuals to help explain data and analytics concepts.

If you can effectively communicate data and analytics concepts, you will be well on your way to a successful data analytics career.

Education Requirements

Pursuing a career in data analytics generally requires earning at least a bachelor’s degree. Several degrees could lead to a career in data analytics, including degrees in computer science, mathematics, and statistics.

You can find many specialized data analytics programs at the graduate level as well, such as:

  • MBA in Business Analytics: This program will teach you to be more confident in your ability to present not only qualitative information but also quantitative data analytics for decision-making purposes. You’ll learn about the different business analytics tools and techniques used across all business areas, from finance & accounting systems to strategic planning processes — even sales and marketing!
  • MS in Business Analytics: Depending on your career goals, an MS in Business Analytics is another great option for individuals interested in careers involving data analytics in business. Learning how to use structured and unstructured data to find solutions in the business world can make you an invaluable asset.
  • MS in Digital Marketing Analytics: This program will teach you to take actionable business data from customers’ experience with owned, paid, and shared media. You’ll also learn the tools that comprise modern-day marketing landscapes like social platforms or customer relationship management (CRM) systems and derive clear insights into what matters most for businesses.
  • MS in Human Resources Analytics: This program allows you to learn about modern, cutting-edge practices in human resources while also learning how data analysis can be used for decision-making.

While many programs offer degrees specifically in data analytics, having a degree in statistics, math, computer science, information systems, or engineering can also prepare you for a successful career in data analytics.

The rapid expansion of the big data industry means a growing demand for qualified data analysis professionals. These degrees will give you the skills you need to succeed as a data analyst.

What Does the Data Analyst Career Path Look Like?

Many different industries hire data analysts. The career path for a data analyst can differ depending on the employer, but you’ll typically start with education and then work as a data analyst.

From there, many roles will provide job-specific skills, and the opportunities for advancement vary significantly by company.

However, here is a general overview of what the data analyst career path may look like:

  1. Education: Many data analysts have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or a related field. However, some employers may require a master’s degree.
  2. Starting as a data analyst: After completing the necessary education, most people start their careers as entry-level data analysts. In this role, they may be responsible for collecting and organizing data and performing fundamental analysis.
  3. Career advancement: There are many opportunities for career advancement for data analysts. Some may move into management roles, while others may specialize in a particular area of data analysis.

So, what type of data analytics career is right for you? The answer to that question may not be easy to determine, but it’s important to consider your skills, interests, and goals.

Do you want to work with data daily? Are you interested in learning new programming languages and techniques? What are your long-term career aspirations?
