What Are the Different Types of Marketing Degrees?

marketing degrees

Marketing is a large and varied industry tied up closely with arenas like advertising, reputation management, and sales, but also involves other practices. Marketing as a field has continued to evolve as the channels we use for marketing have evolved. Since it is a large field with several careers and specializations that you can pursue, getting a marketing degree, while not required to make a career, can be a huge boon.

Specific focuses and degree-level knowledge can improve your ability to compete for favorable jobs in such a big industry. Additionally, this professional development can help improve your earning power and increase your ability to get high-level and even C-suite positions. Most importantly, since professional marketers often wear several different hats, pursuing a marketing degree can help you get more comfortable in all the roles you may have to step into.

Bachelor’s Degrees in Marketing

A bachelor’s degree in marketing is a good choice for those looking for entry-level positions. While a degree may not be required by a company, it can help set you apart as a candidate. A bachelor’s in marketing provides the necessary understanding and skills required for a wide range of entry-level jobs in the field. Some schools offer degrees in business administration with a concentration in marketing, while others offer specific marketing programs. A bachelor’s degree typically takes four years, but may take more or less depending on your course load. Some of the things you’ll learn with a bachelor’s degree in marketing may include:

  • Branding;
  • Promotion;
  • Consumer behavior;
  • Strategic management;
  • Global economics;
  • Digital analytics;
  • Social media marketing.

The specifics of what you’ll learn will vary based on your school and specific degree, but these are just some of the basics.

Master’s Degrees in Marketing

Higher-level marketing opportunities may require more than a bachelor’s degree, so it may be worthwhile to pursue a master’s. These opportunities may range from high-level positions, such as senior managers, to positions with high-profile companies. A master’s in marketing will expand on what you’ve learned in your bachelor’s but with a more intense focus on the intricacies of the profession. Some things that you may learn while earning your master’s in marketing may include:

  • Marketing theory;
  • Product development;
  • Data manipulation and visualization;
  • KPI planning and management;
  • AI-led marketing;
  • Luxury asset management;

A master’s degree usually takes about two years, depending on the coursework you did during your bachelor’s, as well as the number of courses you take per semester. Some schools offer a master’s in business administration with a concentration in marketing or other marketing specialties, such as digital marketing, or marketing analytics. These specializations can come in handy, especially if you have a specific trajectory in mind for your career.

What Jobs Require a Marketing Degree?

Not all jobs in marketing require a marketing degree. However, a vast majority of jobs will require some kind of experience, which you can get through either a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Some job titles you’re more likely to get with a degree in marketing include:

  • Marketing Manager: The marketing manager for a company oversees the entire marketing department, and inputs on all marketing strategies and campaigns. Depending on company size and brand equity, this could be an entry-level or senior position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), marketing managers make an average of $133,380 per year
  • Market Research Analyst: Market research analysts study trends in their given market to understand customer demand, as well as changes in the industry’s processes and best practices. These are typically entry-level jobs, and a company may employ more than one analyst at a time. According to the BLS, marketing research analysts make an average of $63,920 per year
  • Social Media Manager: A social media manager runs all a company’s social media accounts, and uses these accounts to further the company’s internal and external goals. Similar to a marketing manager, the size and status of the company will determine the experience and degree you may need. While there is no specific BLS data for social media managers, related careers, such as PR specialists are reported to make an average of $62,800 per year
  • SEO Specialist: An SEO specialist oversees the search engine optimization (SEO) efforts of a company. This can include website design, content creation, as well as standard marketing practices. This is another job title which the qualifications for will vary depending on the size of the company you’re working for. There is no BLS data specifically for SEO specialists, however, related careers like market research analysts, make over $63,000 per year.

These are only a few of the careers available to you with a marketing degree. Since this field is so varied, the opportunities are virtually endless for qualified professionals.

How Do I Choose a Marketing Degree?

Your desired career or industry is a major factor in deciding the type of marketing degree you should pursue. The job requirements of your desired field or position will also help inform what education or training you should pursue, so be sure to keep an eye on job postings as you move through your coursework.

Talking with your school’s career advisor can also be another way to get input on which degree to follow. If you don’t have an idea of what job title you’d like, but you know you want to work remotely or have opportunities to travel, then a career advisor can help match you up with jobs in your field that enable that activity. You can also perform this search for yourself by checking out different job postings on online boards and comparing the position titles.

Marketing, in particular, is a popular degree choice, with colleges in the United States awarding 52,262 degrees in this field in the 2019-2020 school year. This popularity means that not only is this degree a great career choice, but it is also easily accessible at colleges and universities all across the United States. By earning a marketing degree, you can increase your knowledge of the field, gain experience, and present yourself as a qualified marketing professional.
